Machete pal Machote
2025
Machete pal Machote is a dance–performance that commemorates the lives of Black trans people murdered by patriarchal violence, transforming grief into a ritual act of memory, fury, and resistance.
The work is activated through dancing with a pair of machetes and through invocation via fire and tobacco smoke, calling upon ancestral forces to confront and denounce the violences that persist against Black and gender-diverse bodies.
By combining the dance of Ogun, Afrofuturist aesthetics, African totemism (Benin), and voguing, the piece creates a space of commemoration, battle, and collective affirmation.
